Alex John Groza was an American basketball player whose career combined notable successes with an abrupt fall. As captain and center of the University of Kentucky team, he belonged to the group known as the “Fabulous Five,” captured national championships in 1948 and 1949, and was a key member of the U.S. squad that won Olympic gold in 1948. In college basketball he received multiple All‑American honors and was twice chosen Most Valuable Player of the Final Four. Early in his professional career he excelled in the newly formed NBA, averaging better than 20 points per game and being named rookie of the year by contemporary sportswriters. His trajectory ended in 1951 when he was implicated in a point‑shaving scheme tied to his college play; consequently, the league imposed a lifetime ban on Groza. After finishing his playing career, Groza served as a coach and executive, enjoyed a successful tenure at Bellarmine College, and held positions in the American Basketball Association, including coach and general manager. Despite the incident that cut his playing career short, his legacy remains connected to his collegiate championships and his subsequent influence as a coach and executive.
