David Woodley Packard is an American businessman, former professor, and philanthropist, and the son of Hewlett-Packard’s cofounder. He served on HP’s board from 1987 to 1999 and became publicly known for opposing the proposed merger between HP and Compaq. His corporate work has been accompanied by a strong commitment to the humanities and cultural preservation.
Packard became a prominent supporter of classical studies and the digitization of humanities research. He also supports film preservation and oversees operations at the Stanford Theatre.
His public work combines business leadership, academic support, and philanthropy focused on conserving cultural heritage, leaving a legacy particularly in classical studies, audiovisual heritage, and archaeological preservation.
