Louis Charles d’Orléans, known as the Count of Beaujolais, was a French prince of the House of Orléans whose life was shaped by the revolutionary upheavals of the late 18th century and their impact on the royal family. A son of Duke Louis Philippe II of Orléans, he spent his adolescence imprisoned during the Revolution and contracted tuberculosis during that time, a condition that shaped his later life. After his father’s execution he was exiled with his brothers to the United States, where they lived on diplomatic stipends and traveled to cities such as Philadelphia, Boston and New York.
In the following decade he crossed the Atlantic amid arrests and expulsions at ports including Havana, before settling temporarily in England, in Twickenham. In 1804 he attempted to join the British navy, but illness prevented an active naval career; he did, however, take part in coastal operations against Napoleonic forces.
Louis Charles’s life illustrates the vicissitudes of a princely generation displaced by the French Revolution: exile, efforts to serve in allied militaries, and frail health that culminated in his death in Malta in 1808. His legacy lies in representing the losses and adaptations of the French high nobility during the revolutionary and Napoleonic eras.
