Ronald David Laing was a Scottish psychiatrist whose work had a profound impact on twentieth-century debates about the nature of mental illness. Trained at and active in institutions such as the Tavistock Institute, he became known for redirecting attention from biologically based psychiatry to an existential and phenomenological grasp of psychic experience, arguing that patients’ accounts—even those dismissed as “irrational”—possess an internal logic and subjective meaning.
His book The Divided Self (1960) became a touchstone by offering a psychological and relational interpretation of schizophrenia that opposed strictly organic explanations. In the 1960s Laing participated in experimental community-care initiatives, including the Philadelphia Association and the Kingsley Hall experiment, which brought therapists and patients together in shared living spaces.
Frequently associated with the movement labeled antipsychiatry—an epithet he rejected—Laing drew on existentialist thought and the New Left in his critique of mainstream psychiatric practices. His works, which also include Sanity, Madness and the Family and The Politics of Experience, had a lasting influence on psychotherapeutic approaches and on debates over ethics, institutional practice, and guardianship in mental health.
