Alexander Theodore Shulgin was an American chemist and pharmacologist of Russian descent, known for his extensive work with synthetic psychoactive compounds. Trained in biochemistry, he worked in industry and academic research before devoting himself to the independent synthesis of hundreds of psychedelic and entactogenic substances, often in his home laboratory. His work encompassed detailed descriptions of synthetic routes as well as self-experimentation to assess psychopharmacological effects. In the 1970s Shulgin popularized the use of MDMA in psychotherapeutic research contexts, promoting its study among psychologists and publishing his findings in articles and presentations. In partnership with his wife, he compiled voluminous documentation on phenethylamines and tryptamines in works widely cited by researchers and enthusiasts, recording syntheses, dosages, and subjective reports. He is regarded as a pioneering and controversial figure: hailed by many as a driving force behind the revival of clinical interest in psychedelics, and criticized by others for publishing methods to produce compounds that later circulated uncontrolled. His legacy includes chemical and bibliographic contributions that continue to influence contemporary studies of substance-assisted psychotherapy and the chemistry of novel analogs.
