Alfredo Foni was a distinguished Italian footballer and coach, best known for his solidity as a defender and for a successful career both on the pitch and on the touchline. As a player, he was part of the defence of the Italian national team that won the 1938 World Cup, forming with Pietro Rava a partnership considered reliable and decisive for the title; earlier he won the gold medal at the 1936 Olympic Games, becoming one of the few athletes to win both an Olympic gold and a World Cup. At club level he made his mark with Juventus, where he played more than three hundred matches, was a member of the Serie A winners in 1934–35, and lifted two Coppa Italia trophies before retiring in 1947.
After moving into management, Foni enjoyed success with Internazionale, guiding the club to consecutive Serie A titles in 1952–53 and 1953–54 with sides noted for their defensive compactness. He also managed the Italian national team from 1954 to 1958, a period of attempted renewal that nevertheless ended with Italy missing the 1958 World Cup. Later he coached Roma to continental successes and led Switzerland at the 1966 World Cup, underscoring his international reputation. He died in 1985, remembered as a defensive benchmark and a coach capable of winning national titles and gaining recognition beyond Italy.
