Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was a Pakistani jurist and politician, founder and first chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). He became a central figure in Pakistani politics in the 1960s and 1970s, serving in ministerial posts under military governments and later as president (1971–1973) and prime minister (1973–1977). Educated in law and political science at universities in the United Kingdom and the United States, Bhutto held key government positions and rose to national prominence by promoting a nationalist and socialist agenda. He pursued nationalization policies, strengthened the Atomic Energy Commission and launched Pakistan’s nuclear program, which he described as a strategic priority. On the international stage he negotiated important agreements after the 1971 war, including the Simla Agreement and the repatriation of prisoners of war; he organised the historic Islamic Summit in Lahore in 1974 and deepened ties with countries such as China. His administration also faced internal insurgency and criticism for authoritarian measures. Removed in a military coup in 1977, he was tried and executed in 1979 — an outcome that remains controversial. Bhutto’s legacy is mixed: he is remembered as a charismatic leader who shaped Pakistan’s modern political system while also being criticized for repressive practices and economic problems.
