Alois Alzheimer was a German psychiatrist and neuropathologist best known for first describing a clinical and pathological entity that would become known as Alzheimer’s disease. Trained in medicine in Würzburg, he worked in psychiatric hospitals and academic institutions and was notable for pioneering histopathological studies of the cerebral cortex in collaboration with Franz Nissl. At the Frankfurt asylum, Alzheimer introduced more humane therapeutic practices, such as reducing restraints and providing psychotherapeutic care, while simultaneously investigating organic causes of mental illness. His early studies of cerebral vascular changes and his habilitation in Munich consolidated his scientific reputation. As an intellectual partner of Emil Kraepelin, Alzheimer helped distinguish forms of dementia at a time when psychiatry sought clinical classification of mental disorders. In 1912 he became a professor in Breslau, where he directed a neurological and psychiatric institute until falling ill and dying in 1915. His legacy lies in the neuropathological identification that established the medical recognition of the dementia bearing his name, shaping decades of clinical and neuropathological research on dementias.
