Anne Stevenson was an Anglo-American poet and essayist whose work spanned much of the 20th century and the early 21st. Raised in the United States and educated at the University of Michigan, she settled in the United Kingdom, where she published an extensive body of poetry — collections, selected volumes, and several critical editions — and established a reputation as a literary critic. The author of roughly a dozen books of poetry, Stevenson also wrote studies of figures such as Elizabeth Bishop and the controversial biography Bitter Fame: A Life of Sylvia Plath (1989), which provoked debate about critical reading and literary biography. Her output includes both volumes of verse and essays on poetics, gathered in collections and anthologies she edited. Recognized for the quality of her overall work, she was the first recipient of the Northern Rock Foundation Writer’s Award (2002) and received the Lannan Prize in 2007. She lived most of her life in the United Kingdom, influencing generations of poets and critics through her rigorous work and her active role in the reception of English-language poets.
