Antoine Blondin was a French writer associated with the literary movement known as the Hussards, a group defined by an aesthetic of “art for art’s sake” and a rhetoric critical of left-wing intellectuals. Trained in philosophy, he made his debut with L'Europe buissonnière (1949), which won the Prix des Deux Magots, introduced him to the literary circuit and brought him friendships with authors such as Marcel Aymé and Roger Nimier. His writing mixes humor, wordplay and reflections on friendship, bohemian life and the effects of World War II — recurring themes in novels like Les Enfants du bon Dieu, L'Humeur vagabonde and Un singe en hiver. Blondin also gained renown as a sports columnist for L'Équipe, covering numerous editions of the Tour de France and the Olympic Games, and raising cycling reportage to an almost epic register. Politically aligned with the right in his early decades, he collaborated with monarchist publications, though he later stepped back from political activism. His work won critical recognition and prizes, including the Prix Goncourt de la Nouvelle in 1977 for Quat'saisons. Remembered for his bohemian persona and caustic humor, he left contributions both to fiction and to sports chronicle; a literary prize bearing his name rewards the best sports column.
