Antoine Pinay was a French industrialist and conservative politician, best known for leading the government as President of the Council from 1952 to 1953 and for his later roles as Minister of Foreign Affairs (1955–1956) and Minister of Finance during the transition to the Fifth Republic. Born into a family of entrepreneurs, he first made his mark in local and national administration, serving as mayor and deputy before joining the Senate and helping to found the center‑right grouping the National Centre of Independents and Peasants (CNIP). His time in government was noted for stabilizing public finances and the currency during a period of economic and political fragility in postwar France. He also took part in forums and conferences that prepared European cooperation, including the Messina meeting, a precursor to the Treaty of Rome. During the Second World War, although he voted in 1940 for measures that empowered Vichy, he withdrew from posts in the regime, supported resistance efforts and aided persecuted individuals; an official commission later recognized this opposition to Nazism. In the postwar years he retained influence as a figure of moderate conservatism, holding institutional posts into the 1970s and leaving a reputation as a prudent manager of public finances.
