Antônio Carlos Pires was a Brazilian actor, comedian, and screenwriter whose career stretched across six decades, establishing him among the major names in national comedy. He began on radio in the 1940s at Mayrink Veiga and soon moved into film, debuting in 1953 and appearing in the popular chanchadas that marked the period. At the end of the 1950s he entered television, alternating between soap operas and films in the decades that followed. On TV he was notable in productions for TV Rio and Excelsior and, from the 1970s onward, at Rede Globo, where he joined the casts of highly watched comedy programs. He is chiefly remembered for his partnership with Chico Anysio and for the character Joselino Barbacena on Escolinha do Professor Raimundo, a role that brought him widespread recognition. He also appeared in films until 1995, when he acted in O Quatrilho alongside his daughter Glória Pires. In his later years he stepped back from performing because of health problems related to Parkinson’s disease. Offstage and onscreen, he was a cofounder of the Instituto Casazul, dedicated to care for the elderly, leaving a mark on Brazilian comedy and popular culture.
