Maria Theresa Isabella Philippine Louise Josepha Joanna of Austria was an archduchess of the House of Habsburg, born in 1762 as the eldest child of Archduke Joseph, the future Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and Princess Elisabeth of Bourbon-Parma. At the time of her birth she was the apparent heir to the empire, a position that reflected her family's dynastic importance among the European courts of the 18th century. Raised in an environment defined by dynastic alliances and by the influence of both her paternal line—descended from the renowned Empress Maria Theresa—and her maternal connections to the Spanish Bourbon family, Maria Theresa was close to her parents and to members of the Viennese court. Her mother’s early death and the paternal affection she received made her a tender presence in family recollections. Stricken with pleurisy at age seven, she died in January 1770; her death caused profound grief to her father, already emperor. She was buried in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna, where her tomb grouping and effigy underscore the dynastic mourning and the short life of an archduchess meant to symbolize regal continuity.
