Arthur C. Clarke was a British science fiction writer, popular science author, inventor and underwater explorer who settled in Sri Lanka. He became known both for his short stories and novels — including Rendezvous with Rama and sections that inspired 2001: A Space Odyssey — and for non-fiction works that examined space and technology. A graduate in physics and mathematics, he served in the Royal Air Force during World War II as a radar specialist, a role that connected him to the emerging field of communications technology. His most enduring contribution was the proposal of the geostationary satellite as a telecommunications tool, described in a 1945 paper; the orbit has since commonly been called the Clarke orbit. In addition to his literary work, he devoted himself to underwater exploration and photography, interests that prompted his move to Colombo in 1956, where he lived until his death. He received scientific and cultural honors, including the naming of asteroid 4923 Clarke and references in paleontology. Over his career, Clarke had a strong influence on the imagination of science fiction in film and literature, leaving a legacy as a generator of technological ideas and as an author whose work bridges science and speculation.
