George Santayana (Jorge Agustín Nicolás Ruiz de Santayana y Borrás) was a philosopher, essayist, poet and novelist of Spanish origin who trained and taught in the United States while retaining Spanish citizenship. Graduating summa cum laude from Harvard, he pursued philosophical training in Germany and worked under the influence of William James, forming—alongside James and Josiah Royce—a prominent circle in American philosophy at the turn of the nineteenth into the twentieth century. His work covers aesthetics, literary criticism and systematic philosophy. Books such as The Sense of Beauty and Interpretations of Poetry and Religion mark his contributions to aesthetic theory, while The Life of Reason, in five volumes, consolidated his reflections on reason in its moral and cultural manifestations. Later he developed an ontological system in The Realms of Being, deepening a naturalism that distinguishes the realms of essence, matter and spirit. After leaving Harvard in 1912, Santayana settled in Europe, living in England and Italy, where he produced essays, novels and a three-volume autobiography. Recognized as a humanist critic and an intellectual of transatlantic influence, his legacy spans both philosophy and letters, combining scholarship, essayistic clarity and a humanism tempered by skepticism.
