Catherine of Aragon was a Spanish princess and the first queen consort of Henry VIII, remembered chiefly for her political and moral role at the English court. A daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, she brought dynastic prestige to the Tudors and carried out diplomatic duties — in 1507 she acted as representative of the Crown of Aragon in London, cited as the first woman to hold such a post in Europe. As queen she devoted much of her time to charitable works, winning the sympathy of the English people, and showed aptitude for governance: in 1513 she served as regent during the king’s absence and played a prominent part in the mobilization that led to victory at Flodden. The lack of a male heir marked her marriage to Henry VIII and prompted the prolonged dispute over the validity of the union, which ultimately triggered the break between the English crown and Rome. Catherine maintained until the end her conviction that she was the legitimate queen, a stance that reinforced her reputation for firmness and devotion. Learned and multilingual, she knew Latin, Greek, French, Spanish and later English; her legacy combines dynastic prestige, public service, and personal steadfastness in the face of the crises that defined her reign.
