Arthur Kronfeld was a German‑Jewish psychiatrist and psychotherapist trained in medicine and philosophy, who practiced in Germany and later in the Soviet Union. He became known for systematic critiques of Freudian theories published in 1912, and for contributions to psychology, sexology, and the philosophy of science. He worked at Magnus Hirschfeld’s Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, where he headed the department of “mental sexual diseases” and served as a forensic expert in high‑profile cases.
His academic career included doctorates and a habilitation, teaching at the Charité of Humboldt University in Berlin, and from 1931 holding a professorship. With the rise of Nazism he faced professional restrictions and loss of rights; in 1935 he emigrated to Switzerland and, lacking political asylum, accepted in 1936 a position in Moscow at the Piotr Gannushkin Research Institute of Neuropsychiatry, where he introduced therapeutic innovations and acquired Soviet citizenship.
In October 1941, as German forces approached Moscow, Kronfeld and his wife died by suicide in circumstances that remain controversial. His legacy includes critical theoretical work on psychoanalysis, publications on sexuality, and early efforts at the intersection of psychiatry, psychotherapy, and civil rights in mental health.
