Auguste Comte was a 19th-century French philosopher, recognized as the founder of positivism and a precursor of sociology as a scientific discipline. He formulated the so-called "law of three stages" — the intellectual development of humanity passing through the theological, metaphysical, and positive stages — and argued that social inquiry should follow methods analogous to those of the natural sciences, based on observation, comparison, and classification. Influenced by Henri de Saint‑Simon, Comte sought to address the unrest generated by the French Revolution with a doctrine that integrated science and social order. His main work, System of Positive Philosophy, and the later System of Positive Politics, aim to articulate an understanding of society oriented toward prediction and collective improvement, culminating in the controversial proposal of a "Religion of Humanity" and in popularizing the term altruism. Comte's thought exerted great influence in the 19th century on intellectuals such as Karl Marx and John Stuart Mill and helped shape the first generations of sociologists and anthropologists. His legacy endures in the emphasis on empirical methods for studying society and in the idea that scientific knowledge can guide social reform.
