Augustus Edwin John was a Welsh painter and printmaker best known for his work as a portraitist from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century. Trained at the Liverpool Academy and the London School of Art, he was noted for technical vitality and for the psychological depth he brought to his subjects, partly following the influence of masters such as Rembrandt. His output includes drawings, prints and, above all, portraits of notable contemporaries.
Over the course of his career he produced memorable images of figures such as Thomas Hardy, W. B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, James Joyce and Queen Elizabeth II; among his most celebrated works are his portraits of Dylan Thomas, held by national institutions in Wales and London. During the First World War he served with the Canadian forces as a war artist, producing infantry portraits.
By the 1920s he had established himself as one of Britain’s leading portrait painters, although critics have noted a later loss of technical freshness, punctuated by renewed periods of inspiration, notably his 1937 trip to Jamaica. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts and left works and writings that document his method and influence on 20th‑century portrait painting.
