B. F. Skinner was an American psychologist, a leading theorist of behaviorism and a central figure in founding the experimental analysis of behavior. An emeritus professor at Harvard, he developed the concept of radical behaviorism and systematized experimental methods for studying how the environment shapes behavior, arguing that a history of reinforcement explains human actions more than introspective mental states. Skinner created pioneering instruments and techniques, including the operant conditioning chamber (known as the “Skinner box”) and the cumulative recorder, which made it possible to measure response rates and investigate reinforcement schedules. In collaboration with Charles Ferster, his research culminated in influential works such as Schedules of Reinforcement (1957). A prolific author—he published dozens of books and hundreds of articles—Skinner also explored social applications of his ideas, notably in the utopian novel Walden Two (1948) and in Verbal Behavior (1957). His work shaped twentieth-century experimental psychology and influenced applied fields such as behavior analysis and education.
