Bartholomäus Scultetus was a prominent figure in the German scientific Renaissance: a magistrate and polymath who worked as a mathematician, astronomer, cartographer and served several times as mayor of Görlitz. Educated at Leipzig and Wittenberg, he combined a public career — as councillor, treasurer, judge and, for six terms, burgomaster — with a substantial technical and historical output, leaving diaries and legal compilations that document urban life in the late sixteenth century. As a cartographer he produced the first detailed map of Upper Lusatia (Oberlausitz) and charted Sorbian–German language boundaries, a body of work that made him a regional authority and earned him official commissions, including from the Russian court. In astronomy and gnomonics he was noted for methods of precise time measurement: he designed meridians, improved dials and contributed to the clock of the Görlitz town hall. Scultetus also took an active role in the adoption of the Gregorian calendar reform in the lands of Upper Lusatia, siding with the reform despite Protestant resistance. His correspondence and ties with leading astronomers of the period, such as Tycho Brahe and Kepler, attest to his place within European scientific networks. He left printed works on calendars, weather prediction, a meridian and accounts of comets, and bequeathed a significant legacy for local history and applied science of the era.
