Bebe Neuwirth is an American actress, singer and dancer whose career was established on Broadway and in television. She first attracted attention as a member of the cast of A Chorus Line (1980) and rose to prominence for her portrayal of Nickie in the 1986 revival of Sweet Charity, a role that earned her the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress. She became a leading figure in musical theatre with roles such as Lola in Damn Yankees (1994) and, especially, Velma Kelly in the revival of Chicago, helping to revive and sustain that production over many years. Throughout her career, Neuwirth has won two Tony Awards and other theatre honors, moving between leading roles and repertory parts in productions that shaped the American musical stage. In film and television she has taken a range of roles, including the recurring part of Dr. Lilith Sternin on Cheers and Frasier and the prosecutor Tracey Kibre on Law & Order: Trial by Jury, in addition to film appearances and voice work. Known for her versatility — dance, singing and dramatic acting — her career is notable in American theatre both for its individual excellence and for her role in the renewed appreciation of genre classics.
