Ben Bradlee was one of the leading editors in twentieth-century American journalism. As managing editor and later executive editor of The Washington Post (1965–1991), he coordinated investigations and coverage that shaped the press’s role in public life, notably by authorizing the publication of the Pentagon Papers and supporting Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s reporting on the Watergate scandal.
