Ben Webster was one of the great American tenor saxophonists, active from the 1930s through the 1970s. Born in Kansas City, he built his career playing with leading figures of the swing era and big-band jazz, including Bennie Moten, Count Basie, Cab Calloway and Fletcher Henderson, and emerged as a soloist in Duke Ellington’s orchestra beginning in 1940.
Over the course of his career he recorded notable work as a bandleader and in prestigious partnerships — including collaborations with Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum and Coleman Hawkins — and joined touring packages such as Jazz at the Philharmonic. His robust phrasing and the influence of both Johnny Hodges and Coleman Hawkins placed him among the most admired tenor players of his generation.
In the mid-1960s he lived in Europe, residing in cities such as London, Amsterdam and, finally, Copenhagen, where he spent his final years and established a local cultural legacy. After his death the Ben Webster Foundation was created in Denmark to promote jazz and support young musicians; his 1938 saxophone is preserved as an institutional memento.
