Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a German-born architect who became an American citizen and a central figure in twentieth-century modern architecture. A teacher at the Bauhaus and the author of emblematic works such as the German Pavilion in Barcelona and Villa Tugendhat, he was known for formal rigor, clear geometry and the use of industrial materials—steel and glass—to shape interiors and façades. His spare, functional aesthetic, summed up in famous aphorisms like “less is more,” helped crystallize the International Style and influenced the emergence of minimalism. Trained in practice while working with figures such as Bruno Paul and Peter Behrens, Mies absorbed references from neoplasticism, constructivism and the fluid space of Frank Lloyd Wright, while rejecting historicist ornament. In partnership with Lilly Reich he produced iconic furniture (the Barcelona chair, the Brno chair) that reinforced his idea of unity between architecture and interior. After emigrating to the United States in 1933, he consolidated his academic and professional career, directing the School of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology and promoting industrialized construction in corporate and institutional projects. His legacy endures in contemporary architecture’s emphasis on structural clarity and economy of means.
