Mstislav Rostropovich was one of the twentieth century’s greatest cellists and conductors, renowned both for his instrumental virtuosity and for his influence on the instrument’s repertoire. Over the course of his career he inspired, commissioned and premiered more than a hundred works, collaborating closely with composers such as Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev, Benjamin Britten, Krzysztof Penderecki, Olivier Messiaen and Luciano Berio. Those partnerships decisively expanded the cello repertoire and left a mark on contemporary music. In addition to his work as a soloist and professor at the Moscow Conservatory, Rostropovich developed a career as a conductor, making his public conducting debut in 1962 and leading major houses and orchestras. His interpretations and commitment to new works established him as a touchstone for subsequent generations of instrumentalists. Rostropovich also became known as a defender of human rights and artistic freedom, a stance that earned him international recognition and brought him into conflict with Soviet authorities. He received numerous awards and honors during his lifetime and left a lasting legacy through his recordings, premieres and the promotion of cultural and civic values.
