Louis Charles of France, known to Legitimists as Louis XVII, was a prince of the House of Bourbon and a symbolic figure of the monarchy during the French Revolution. The youngest son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, he became dauphin after the death of his elder brother and, with his father's execution in 1793, was claimed as king by royalists despite never exercising power. Louis Charles’s short life was marked by the loss of the Court and by imprisonment: after the fall of the monarchy the family was arrested and the boy separated from his parents. Placed in the care of revolutionary agents, he suffered mistreatment, isolation and deteriorating health, which culminated in his death in the Temple Tower at the age of ten. The illness he suffered and the obscure circumstances of his death gave rise in the nineteenth century to myths and numerous claimants who alleged they were the surviving dauphin, fueling political and dynastic debates. With the Restoration, his uncle took the throne as Louis XVIII, adopting the regnal number symbolically in honor of his nephew and cementing Louis Charles’s place as a tragic figure remembered in the memory of the French monarchy.
