Blaise Pascal was a French mathematician, writer, physicist, inventor, philosopher and theologian. A prodigy, Pascal was educated by his father and his early work concerns the natural and applied sciences. He made significant contributions to the study of fluids. He clarified the concepts of atmospheric pressure and the vacuum, extending the work of Evangelista Torricelli. Pascal wrote important texts on the scientific method.
At the age of 19 he invented the first calculating machine, called the arithmetic machine, later the Pascaline wheel and finally the Pascaline. He built about twenty copies in the following decade. A first-rate mathematician, he created two new fields of research: first, he published a treatise on projective geometry at the age of sixteen; then, in 1654, he developed a method to solve the "problem of points", which, giving rise, over the course of the 18th century, to the calculus of probabilities, strongly influenced modern economic theories and the social sciences.
