Bruno Balz was a lyricist and composer from Germany, noted for his vast output of popular songs (Schlager) from the start of German sound cinema through the 1960s. The author of more than a thousand lyrics, he collaborated especially with composer Michael Jary; their songs helped establish performers such as Zarah Leander and shaped the film music of the period.
His career spanned the Nazi era, when he was arrested several times because of his homosexuality. In 1936 he spent months in prison and was forced to keep his name unpublished; in 1941 he was detained again by the Gestapo and released only after colleagues intervened on the grounds that his songs had propaganda value. Immediately after that release he composed widely popular hits in partnership with Jary.
Some of his songs became anthems both for the masses and, in a different sense, for homosexuals persecuted under the regime. Even after the war, the continuing criminal statute against homosexuality limited public recognition of his authorship. His legacy endures in his influence on German popular music and in institutional memory, as evidenced by a Berlin theater that bears his name.
