Le Corbusier, the pen name of Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, was a Swiss-French architect, urban planner, painter and writer recognized as one of the pioneers of modern architecture. Over five decades his work spanned projects in Europe, Asia and the Americas, and established principles such as the use of reinforced concrete, open floor plans and pure volumetry, which profoundly influenced twentieth-century architectural production. As a theorist and urban planning advocate, Le Corbusier sought solutions for overcrowded cities and was a founding member of the Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM). Among his most significant works is the plan for Chandigarh in India, where he played a decisive role in designing government sectors and organizing the new capital's urban layout. In addition to buildings, he designed emblematic furniture — such as the LC4 chaise longue — and published influential texts that systematized his rationalist vision. In 2016, seventeen of his projects were inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List as an outstanding contribution to the modern movement. He remains a figure of major influence and also of controversy: critics point to the social impacts of his proposals and to allegations about his political positions, which continue to fuel debate over his legacy.
