Janet Gaynor, born Laura Augusta Gainor, was one of the great stars of American cinema from the late 1920s through the 1930s. Discovered by Fox, she quickly rose to popularity during the silent era and the transition to sound, starring in about 34 films that established her with audiences and critics. In 1929 she became the first winner of the Academy Award for Best Actress, honored for performances in three films (including 7th Heaven and Sunrise) — a unique achievement in the history of the awards. She remained prominent in the sound era, with a major role in the original version of A Star Is Born (1937), which earned her another Oscar nomination. Dissatisfied with the roles she was being offered, she retired from film in 1939 and devoted herself to private life, returning sporadically to the arts in later decades, including as a painter and in Broadway plays. Her legacy is linked to the shift from silent to sound cinema and to the early recognition of acting at the inaugural Academy Awards.
