Cab Calloway was one of the most emblematic bandleaders and singers in American jazz, a central figure of the swing era. He became known for his energetic stage presence at the Cotton Club in Harlem, where he led Cab Calloway and His Orchestra and popularized scat singing in performances that blended jazz and vaudeville. His exuberant vocal style and the catchphrase “Hi-de-ho” were cemented by the major hit "Minnie the Moocher" (1931), the first record by an African American musician to sell a million copies. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Calloway led one of the nation’s most celebrated dance bands, featuring prominent musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Ben Webster and Milt Hinton. His orchestra was influential in spreading swing and enjoyed wide exposure via national radio, where he was a pioneer as the first African American to host a syndicated program. Beyond his musical career, he appeared in films and musicals — including Stormy Weather, Porgy and Bess and The Blues Brothers — and experienced a notable resurgence of public interest in the later decades of his life. He received official recognition, including the National Medal of Arts, and left a lasting legacy in the history of jazz and American popular culture.
