Camille Jordan was a French mathematician and engineer whose work influenced several areas of nineteenth-century mathematics. Trained at the École Polytechnique, he worked professionally as an engineer and later taught at the École Polytechnique and the Collège de France, where he was also known for some unconventional notational choices.

His work spans topology, linear algebra, measure theory, analysis, and group theory. Results that bear his name include the Jordan curve theorem, the Jordan normal form and Jordan matrix, Jordan measure (content), and the Jordan–Hölder theorem on composition series. His contributions also include investigations of finite groups and the Mathieu primitive groups.

He published influential works such as Traité des substitutions et des équations algébriques (1870), which disseminated and systematized Galois theory, and Cours d’analyse de l’École polytechnique (three volumes, 1882–1887; revised 1893), a work that helped establish modern analysis in France. He received academic recognition, including the Poncelet prize for his 1870 treatise.
