Carl Ludwig Siegel was one of the most influential German mathematicians of the 20th century, with decisive contributions to number theory and celestial mechanics. His work encompassed analytic number theory, Diophantine equations and the study of L-functions, where he identified phenomena that led to new understandings of the zeros of arithmetic functions.
Siegel proved general results on the finiteness of integer solutions on curves of genus greater than one, marking a significant advance in Diophantine equations. He developed methods related to the Hardy–Littlewood circle method and theta functions, which later connected with adelic theories and the modular forms that now bear his name — the Siegel modular varieties, central to the theory of abelian varieties.
Beyond his technical output, Siegel worked as an expositor and historian of mathematics, leaving collections of lectures and works on function theory and celestial mechanics. His legacy was recognized with several honors, including the Wolf Prize in Mathematics in 1978, cementing his standing as a leading figure in modern mathematics.
