Carlos Castaneda was a writer and anthropologist trained at the University of California whose work became a controversial reference within the counterculture and studies of shamanism in the Americas. He became known for a dissertation turned bestseller, The Teachings of Don Juan (1968), in which he recounts encounters with Don Juan Matus, an alleged Yaqui sorcerer, and describes experiences with psychoactive plants such as peyote. Those accounts spawned eleven autobiographical books that blend ethnography, personal narrative, and spiritual elements, influencing New Age movements and readers interested in practices of perception and consciousness. Academic and public reception was polarized: admirers regarded him as a spiritual guide and innovator, while critics questioned the veracity of his sources and methods, pointing to signs of fictionalization and a lack of empirical documentation. By the mid-1970s his figure gained wide media visibility, including coverage in Time magazine, and also faced bans and controversies in countries such as Brazil. Castaneda’s legacy remains ambivalent: his works continue to inspire those interested in shamanism and consciousness techniques, while scholars retain skepticism about the historicity and anthropological status of his accounts.
