Carolyn Jeanne Bessette-Kennedy was a public relations professional and a figure associated with the fashion world in the United States. A Boston University graduate, she began her career as a sales associate at Calvin Klein and advanced to hold prominent positions within the company, including director of fashion show production and manager of high-profile clients. Her work in fashion retail and in managing relationships with celebrities brought her recognition in the industry and a salary comparable to executive-level positions at the time. Her 1996 marriage to John F. Kennedy Jr. — heir to one of the United States’ best-known political families — thrust her into intense media scrutiny and turned her personal style into a matter of public interest. From that point on she became a constant target of paparazzi, which affected both her private and professional life. Carolyn and her husband died in 1999 in a plane crash off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, an event that cut her life short and cemented her image in the public memory as a brief but highly publicized style icon.
