Carry van Bruggen, the pen name of Carolina Lea de Haan, was a prominent Dutch writer whose work moved from naturalism to an introspective and innovative prose. Initially a teacher and newspaper contributor, she gained recognition with De verlatene, a novel centered on Jewish life, and established herself with Heleen, a work that marks her shift toward an inward-looking narrative.
Over her career she published novels, short stories and critical and philosophical essays; among these, Prometheus (1919) is notable for its reflection on individualism in Western literature. Her output also includes texts inspired by childhood, such as Het huisje aan de sloot, which enjoyed wide circulation.
In 1927 she published Eva, a pioneering book in the Dutch language for its full use of interior monologue and stream of consciousness, exploring the search for authenticity and the tension between sensibility and reason — music, especially Mahler, plays a symbolic role in the protagonist’s subjective construction.
Carry van Bruggen’s work remains relevant for its formal experimentation and for its psychological examination of individual conflicts, influencing the modernization of narrative in the Dutch language.
