Cecil Beaton was an English photographer and costume designer whose career spanned fashion, portraiture, war work and theatre, establishing him as a central figure in twentieth‑century British visual culture. He became known for sophisticated portraits of celebrities and members of royalty, as well as fashion photography that shaped aesthetic standards from the 1920s through the 1960s. His work as a film costume designer earned him two Academy Awards for Best Costume Design, for Gigi (1959) and My Fair Lady (1965), marking a successful transition from editorial photography to cinematic design.
A prolific author, Beaton published numerous albums, diaries and photography books documenting travels, personalities and cultural backstage life — among them The Book of Beauty, Portrait of New York and several collections of diaries compiled over the years. His wartime images and commissions for cultural institutions became historical references, preserved in university and museum archives and exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Beaton’s legacy lies both in his iconic images and in his influence on fashion, theatre and film; his collections and archives continue to serve as resources for the study of style, celebrity and photography in the twentieth century.
