Charles Culliford Boz Dickens, known as Charles Dickens Jr., was an English writer and editor, the eldest son of the novelist Charles Dickens. After several failed business ventures—including a bankruptcy in the printing trade—he took over the editorship of the magazine All the Year Round, founded by his father, and devoted himself to editing and producing reference works. His reputation rests chiefly on the encyclopedic handbooks he published from 1879: Dickens's Dictionary of London and Dickens's Dictionary of the Thames, guides regarded as "unconventional" for their mixture of practical information, descriptions, and anecdotes. These dictionaries were reissued annually until his death and established his standing as a compiler and cultural topographer of urban and riverine spaces. In addition to those titles, he published dictionaries on days, Paris, and British universities, and wrote prefaces and biographical notes for reprints of his father's works. His career reflects the tension between commercial and literary ambitions within a highly visible family, and produced an editorial legacy centered on local guides and practical reference works.
