Charles Edward Stuart

Charles Edward Stuart, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, was the most celebrated claimant of the House of Stuart to the crowns of Britain. Grandson of the deposed James II, he spent his life in Italian exile and emerged as the symbolic leader of the Jacobite movement when he led the 1745 rising that sought to restore the Stuart dynasty. His landing in Scotland sparked early victories, such as Prestonpans and Falkirk Muir, but ended in a decisive defeat at Culloden (1746), an event that effectively ended the restoration attempt.

Charles Edward combined personal charisma with strategic failings; after the campaign he became a romantic icon of a lost cause, fed by his dramatic escapes and the image of a melancholy hero. Later attempts to obtain foreign support, including French plans, failed to restore him. Returning to the continent, he lived in France, Florence, and Rome, where he spent his final years and married in 1772.

His legacy is twofold: political, as the last major Jacobite effort against the established order of the eighteenth century; and cultural, in the enduring legend that surrounds his name and shaped the historical and literary memory of the United Kingdom and the Scottish diaspora.
