Christopher Branford Bell was an American musician, guitarist, singer, and songwriter associated with the 1970s power pop movement. As a founding member and leader alongside Alex Chilton, he was part of the band Big Star, whose debut album #1 Record (1972) became a touchstone among critics and musicians despite limited commercial success at the time. Bell left the group after that first album, contributing sporadically to the second record, Radio City (1974). After his departure he pursued a solo career; several of his best-known songs — including "I Am the Cosmos," "I Got Kinda Lost," and the duet with Chilton "You and Your Sister" — remained unreleased until the 1992 solo compilation I Am the Cosmos. Bell’s work circulated widely through posthumous releases and compilations, solidifying his reputation for sophisticated melodies and sensitive arrangements. Bell’s work and legacy influenced later generations of alternative rock and power pop, frequently being rediscovered through reissues and soundtracks that have kept his historical importance in the American music scene alive.
