Aage Christian Alexander Robert, known as Count of Rosenborg, was a member of the House of Glücksburg and a career military officer noted for his long service in the French Foreign Legion. A son of Prince Valdemar of Denmark and a grandson of King Christian IX, he renounced his dynastic rights when he married an Italian noblewoman, while maintaining a public profile tied to the military and the profession of arms.
Trained as an officer in the Danish forces, he served as an observer in Balkan conflicts before joining the French army. Posted to Morocco under the command of Lyautey, he spent 17 years on colonial campaigns in North Africa, where he led operations in the Middle Atlas and took part in the Rif War. He received several mentions and decorations, including the Legion of Honour and the Croix de Guerre for actions in external theatres.
Over the course of his career he held staff positions and commanded battalions of the Legion, taking part in operations in regions such as Tadla, the Anti‑Atlas and Guelmim. He died while traveling in Taza and his grave was later moved to the Legion cemetery in Puyloubier. His legacy is that of a prince‑officer who embodied the union of Danish tradition and French military service during the colonial campaigns of the early twentieth century.
