Constantin Stanislavski was a Russian actor, director, teacher and writer whose work defined major advances in modern theatre. A key figure in the shift toward greater naturalism, he co‑founded the Moscow Art Theatre, where he tested and refined rehearsal and staging methods that transformed dramatic practice in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His acting and directing were notable for their pursuit of verisimilitude and psychological detail on stage, evident in the company’s early productions, including plays by Chekhov. Stanislavski’s principal contribution is the so‑called “system” — a set of procedures for actor training that integrates physical actions, imaginative life and the investigation of a character’s inner motivations. Devised to break with codified gestures, the system guides performers to “live” the dramatic situation according to natural laws, influencing theatre, opera and later film. His teaching and writings (including texts on preparation and role-building) gave rise to numerous schools and international adaptations, among them American streams of the “method.” Stanislavski’s legacy remains central to actor training and directing practice around the world.
