Dan Tyminski is an American musician associated with bluegrass, known as a songwriter, vocalist, and instrumentalist. He gained recognition as a member of Alison Krauss and Union Station and through his solo career, with albums such as Carry Me Across the Mountain, Wheels, and Southern Gothic. His voice appears on landmark recordings of the genre and on soundtracks that reached audiences beyond the bluegrass circuit.
Tyminski has cited strong influence from traditional bluegrass figures and built his career playing mandolin, guitar, and banjo in bands like Lonesome River Band before joining Union Station in 1994. During a hiatus from the group, he formed the Dan Tyminski Band, continuing to collaborate with veteran musicians from the acoustic scene.
His version of “Man of Constant Sorrow,” featured on the soundtrack of the film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, became a popular milestone that raised his profile; he was also the voice on Avicii’s “Hey Brother.” Over the course of his career he has earned multiple Grammy Awards for collective and solo work, establishing himself as an important figure in the contemporary dissemination of bluegrass.
Tyminski’s legacy combines fidelity to the genre’s traditions with participation in projects that brought bluegrass to wider audiences, influencing musicians and expanding the presence of acoustic sound in popular music.
