Daria Halprin is a figure associated with dance, expressive therapy, and a brief film career in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The daughter of creators Lawrence and Anna Halprin, she grew up in the experimental artistic scene of the San Francisco Bay Area, where she studied dance and anthropology and took part in the Dancers' Workshop founded by her mother. Her name became known for playing the female lead in Michelangelo Antonioni’s Zabriskie Point (1970), after appearances in documentary films about San Francisco’s counterculture. Her film notoriety was short-lived: struggling with public exposure, she left acting after two more credits in the early 1970s. Turning to clinical practice, in 1978 she founded the Tamalpa Institute with Anna Halprin, focused on art therapy based on movement, dance, and the visual arts. Over the ensuing decades she published books and articles on methods of creative expression and taught at institutions such as Lesley University. Her legacy lies in linking art and healing: she helped establish somatic and expressive approaches in contemporary art therapy and influenced practices that integrate movement, imagery, and narrative in therapeutic work.
