David Alfaro Siqueiros was one of the leading Mexican muralists of the 20th century, best known for his large fresco murals and for his central role in the muralism movement alongside Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco. His work emphasizes the depiction of the Mexican Revolution and the people as protagonists in the struggle for social justice, expressing an explicit political stance committed to communist ideals.
A technical innovator, Siqueiros experimented with materials and pioneering techniques for mural painting, conducting investigations that helped modernize the practice. This search for new methods accompanied his international output, which included works in the United States and elsewhere in Latin America, and the organization of the Siqueiros Experimental Workshop in New York.
Beyond his artistic activity, he was politically active: he joined the Mexican Communist Party, volunteered in the Spanish Civil War, and endured arrests, exile, and controversies—episodes that influenced both his personal life and his pictorial themes. He received, among other honors, the Lenin Peace Prize (1967) and Mexico’s National Art Prize, distinctions that established him as a central figure in Mexico’s artistic and political life.
