David Joel Horowitz was an American writer and political activist whose intellectual life crossed the New Left and, later, conservatism. In the 1960s he became known as a Marxist activist and intellectual, working for New Left publications and taking part in investigations and campaigns opposing U.S. foreign policy during the Vietnam War. He wrote a biography of Isaac Deutscher and books critical of U.S. foreign policy and American society. In the 1970s he maintained ties to radical movements, including the Black Panther Party, and took part in social support initiatives such as funding a school in Oakland. The episode connected to the murder of Betty Van Patter marked a turning point in his politics, prompting him to break with the left. From that point Horowitz established himself as a conservative author and polemicist: he published memoirs and essays about his ideological conversion, founded a political-studies organization, and remained active as an editor and commentator on conservative websites and magazines. His work includes history and essay books as well as collaborations with Peter Collier on American political families, leaving a controversial and influential imprint on U.S. political debate.
