Dean Arnold Corll was an American serial killer whose crimes from 1970 to 1973 shocked Houston and left a mark on the history of crime in the United States. Working with two teenage accomplices, Corll is accused of abducting, raping, torturing, and murdering at least 28 male youths, most of them teenagers. Most of the victims were recovered in areas such as Houston Heights; in some cases they were acquaintances or former employees of the small candy business Corll owned. The criminal scheme emerged only when one of the accomplices, Elmer Wayne Henley, shot Corll dead and went to authorities, disclosing macabre details and mass burials that triggered an intensive investigation and broad media coverage. At the time, it was the worst-known series of homicides in the U.S. The case produced extensive journalistic records and forensic and psychological studies, and prompted later inquiries into unidentified victims and the effects on affected communities. It remains a point of reference in studies of co-offending in serial crime, exploitation of youth vulnerabilities, and investigative procedures in criminal cases.
