Del Shannon, born Charles Weedon Westover, was an American singer and songwriter known for his early 1960s hits and for his originality as a performer and writer. He rose to international prominence with the single "Runaway" (1961), which paved the way for subsequent successes such as "Hats Off to Larry" and established his vocal signature, marked by a dramatic, emotional falsetto. Throughout the 1960s Shannon recorded for labels including Big Top, Amy and Liberty, releasing albums that blended rock, pop and country influences — including tributes to Hank Williams — and remaining especially relevant in the British market, where his popularity sometimes exceeded that in the U.S. He worked with pianist Max Crook, who co-wrote several arrangements that defined his sound. His legacy is that of one of the first rockers to write his own material and to create a distinct vocal performance style, influencing later performers. In subsequent decades he maintained sporadic activity in recordings and collaborations; his career ended tragically in 1990.
