Doris Hart was a prominent American tennis player in the 1940s and early 1950s, noted for her versatility across singles, doubles and mixed doubles. She reached the world No. 1 ranking in 1951 and became the fourth woman to complete the Career Grand Slam in singles. She was also the first player to achieve the rare “boxed set” of Grand Slam titles — winning at least one singles, doubles and mixed doubles title at each of the four majors. A product of the Miami Hurricanes collegiate program, Hart won 35 Grand Slam titles over her career (6 singles, 14 doubles and 15 mixed doubles), and appeared in 67 major finals. Notable accomplishments include triple-title years at the same tournament, such as Wimbledon 1951, Roland Garros 1952 and the 1954 U.S. Nationals, when she won singles and both doubles events. From 1946 to 1955 she was regularly ranked among the world’s best and was the leading U.S. player in 1954–55. Her career was marked by overcoming a childhood disability in her right leg and by an early transition into a teaching professional role after retiring from competition in 1955. The author of memoirs about her career, Hart was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1969, leaving a lasting impact on women’s tennis through her technique, consistency and breadth of achievements.
